Fremantle, eller Freo som de joviale australierne sier, var første møte med Australia for mange immigranter. Helt frem til 1940-tallet var det ikke stort av siviliasjon her, så da folk etter å ha reist i ukevis med båt fra Europa kom frem til nesten ingenting, var det ikke rart om de så litt skeptiske ut ved ankomst. Følelsen de må ha hatt er bra fanget i denne skulpturen ved Vest-Australias sjøfartsmuseum.

Jeg tror jeg så litt mer optimistisk ut da jeg landet på flyplassen i Perth.

Fremantle, or Freo as the Australians say, was the first port of call for many immigrants to Australia. Until the 1940s the facilities here were rather limited, so when people after weeks and weeks onboard ships arrived to see little civilization, they would naturally seem a bit sceptical. That feeling is splendidly caught in this sculpture outside the Western Australia Maritime Museum.

I hope I appeared slightly more optimistic as I arrived at Perth International Airport.
