How's that for a cuty city wall, huh?
Don't be fooled! The Diyarbakır city wall is a mighty one. It's thick and it's wide and it's 5.5 kilometres long. According to some, this makes it the second largest wall in the world, after a certain Chinese one.
I was advised by the tourist authorities in Diyarbakır not to walk its length, as some parts of it pass through some dubious areas. After having walked the length of it, I can tell you that the real reason they didn't want me to do that, is probably that they didn't want me to find out that the wall actually is broken and open several places. Oh, well. It's an impressive wall nevertheless. |
