The warhead was launched when a strike force of combined UNTIL and PRIMUS commandos tried to thwart the terrorists and take back the sub. The counterstrike was successful but the warhead was launched before full control could be regained of the sub. The strike force did manage to detonate the bird at an altitude of 250 miles above the Pacific Ocean, thus avoiding the worst damage. The prototype warhead did release an unknown and still mysterious radiation into the atmosphere.
This radiation, in combination with other pollutants, is credited with the increasing rate of mutations that are now occuring in my campaign world.
BACKGROUND:
Lionheart was born at the Houston zoo, to two apparently normal african
lions. His mother showed unwarranted agression toward him, trying to kill
him almost from the outset of his birth. He had to be separated from her
and cared for by the Houston zoo staff, who absolutely adored him. His
rate of growth was much slower than the norm for lions, and after some
preliminary testing, it was determined that the cub, now named LionHeart,
was a mutant.
It was almost immediately noticed that the cub had an uncanny intelligence. When he was 9 months old, he was sent to the animal behavioural studies department of Penn State University to ascertain his intellectual capacity. They too, adored him.
At age 4 he exhibited the ability to recognize colors not normally visible to the feline eye. A year later, tests showed that he could differentiate shapes and symbols, and that he could associate specific symbol combinations with learned behavior. They decided to try something very bold. They tried to teach him how to read... and succeeded. Lionheart could effectively communicate with human beings by scratching words onto the concrete floor of his pen with his claws.
This got the attention of Genocide, who promptly infiltrated the BSD. Through nefarious dealings (bribes, etc.,) it was arranged that Lionheart was moved to their labs for studies. The supervisors of the project noticed that the scientists working on the project also seemingly became enamoured with the young lion, and began to investigate the possibility of his possesion of telepathic empathy. Their experiments in this area triggered the lion's semi-latent mindlink ability into full potency.
After Genocide decided that they had learned all they needed to know about Lionheart's mutant abilities, they had decided to destroy him. Lionheart overheard two scientists arguing for his life with their supervisor in the room next to his pen. Up until this point, Lionheart had been pretty much the cat in his attitude towards his captivety. They had kept him fed and relatively comfortable (except for those operations on his head) for 2 years. But now he realized the free ride was coming to a permanent end. It was time to go and stake out his own territory. He notified his friends, the two scientists, and asked them for their help.
There was little they could do except to go to an outside agency for help. They approached SAT and asked them to take the lion to safety, promising to also give them all the data on the Genocide operations at the lab. SAT agreed and promptly broke into the lab, and took Lionheart, along with the core of the lab's central computer, to one of their own labs.
After reviewing Genocide's data on the lion, SAT approached Lionheart and asked them to work for them from time to time. In return they would supply him with whatever was at their disposal that he may desire. Lionheart agreed, and worked with SAT as a scout/spy for three years. When he left SAT on good terms, he was given 10 square miles of land (encased by a fence) to prowl upon at will, and all the food he wanted.
Now Lionheart was approaching maturity, and he was getting bored with the easy life, especially after all the action and intrique of working as a spy. One night he climbed a tree next to the border of his territory and jumped the fence...
He now roams the US Southwest, looking for interesting times.
