Background:

James Cranston is a hero, but not for the best of motives. His mutant powers over gravity surfaced when he was visiting a construction site and fell (or maybe was pushed - he's not really sure) from the 12th floor. Just before he hit the ground he felt some force break his fall and managed to walk away with only some major bruises. Investigating, over the course of several weeks, Cranston found that he could mentally control the gravity field around any object and that his metabolism had speeded up to a phenominal rate. He would quickly recover from almost any wound or exhaustion. An unfortunate side effect of this is that any poisons/viruses/etc. tend to race through his system and have a greater effect that they normally would. He also tends to eat tremendous quantities of food, especially after using his powers.

Once he had a good control over his powers, Cranston decided that it would be a shame to let such awesome abilities go to waste. His job and inheritance provided more than enough money to make crime unnecessary so he decided to see how he would fair against other super-types. In his first encounter he managed to soundly trounce a villain who was in the process of robbing a bank. Not only did Cranston get commended for stopping the robbery, but he had fun doing it - no matter that several cars were destroyed. He now sees superheroics as a competition between himself and the villains and is determined to play (and natuarally to win) as long as no one gets seriously hurt (a few bruises are just part of the game). He has recently taken to carrying a small radio to make sure he doesn't miss any of the action.

Cranston has a romance going with Tracy Fields, an undercover SHIELD agent. They each know of the others "extra-curricular" activities after having difficulties with strange occurances and long absences on both sides.

Explanation of Powers:

By creating a localized, very intense gravity field Gravitar can deflect attacks coming towards him.

The active sonar power is actually a TK touch sense. It can not be heard by ultrasonic hearing but it does exert a noticible pressure (like a light touch) on any object scanned. Gravitar must have the multi- power set to the 40 str. TK slot to use this power but does not have to be using the TK itself.

Identifying Quote:

"Of course you missed, I simply increased the gravity so your shot was harmlessly deflected. I don't think you'll be so lucky."

"Nice maneuver! By the way do you know what's over your head?" CRUNCH!

Sample Encounter: (by Kieran Mullen)

While window shopping in a posh section of the city Cranston heard the characteristic ringing of alarms he had come to love. He ducked into an alleyway and started to change into his costume.

As he hurriedly stripped, he suddenly felt that he was being watched. Slumped by a dumpster was a bum who had seen better days.

``What are you, some sort of pervert?'' Cranston snapped. ``Can't a guy change clothes without being stared at?'' The bum sheepishly got up and staggered out of the alley.

Damn, he thought, hope I get there before all the fun is over. He floated up to the roof, and glanced at the bank across the street. There was the sound of gun fire, and a guard came hurtling through the window, and tumbled across the pavement. Good! He was still in time!

The getaway car was waiting with its engine racing. Cranston concentrated and it floated into the air. The driver gunned it uselessly. Cranston waited for the robbers to emerge. A bluish glow surrounded his body.

Two hulking figures in body armor emerged from the bank. They scanned the street in panic, looking for their get-away car. ``Surrender! You tin cans may be able to take out bank guards, but you are out of your depth now!'' The figure on the left growled and leveled what appeared to be a blaster.

Cranston sighed theatrically. ``This will hurt you a whole lot more than it will hurt me.'' He fielded the incoming blast and reflected it back at the figure on the right. Missing narrowly, it struck an unknown target within the bank. ``Sorry about your put-away car. The driver couldn't stick around.''

Realizing that their blasts would be useless, the armored figures lumbered into the streets so as to pound Gravitar into pulp. `All right smart ass, what's this about the get-away car?''

Releasing it from his TK grasp, Cranston smiled. ``No, I think that it was a put-away car.'' The vehicle crashed on top of the two figures smashing them to the ground.

Tactics:

When first arriving on the scene, Gravitar usually has his multi-power set to full force-field, missile deflection, and flight and is ready to abort to a force wall. After getting an idea of the situation he lands and switches to force-field and Str or TK. Str is used against bricks, TK explosion against agents and martial artists, and TK against most everyone else. If any opponent has an accessible focus then that will be targeted first.

Gravitar does not tend to fight fair. He likes to create distractions with his TK then shift to Str and pound away. He also always looks for dangerous objects in the environment to throw people into.

Typical maneuvers:

Buddy system - Throw a grabbed villain into a henchman, doing damage to both of them.

Pull! - Use the explosion TK to lift a hard to hit opponent into the air and have a haymaker set for when they land (at 1/2 DCV).

Vader Grip - Grab with TK and crush into unconciousness and beyond.

Meteor - Grab a large, heavy object and fly a good distance above his opponent. Drop it and use TK to guide it in and increase its velocity. (Works best on villains who are distracted by other heroes or otherwise oblivious. :))

Possible Extensions and Campaign Use:

Possible extensions: increase CON & REC, find weakness w/TK, martial arts with TK (if allowed) or NND EB linked to TK, hardened force wall, points toward base, more rapid regeneration, TK with variable advantage.

Gravitar can be used as a solo hero who shows up to pound villains and help in large disasters (he thinks regular crime is for the police to take care of). Another possibility is using his resources to found a hero group. In either case, the PC's should begin to distrust his motives and try to prevent excessive property damage. If used as a villain the only change is that he will attack the PCs if he feels the need for a new challenge. He will also cause much more property damage.
