Designer notes: I basically wanted a creature that was similar enough
to another that I didn't have to go through the entire rigmarole in Monstrous
Manual, but different enough that the players couldn't quote the statistics
of the monster verbatim. Basically, I took the Umber Hulk, twisted the
statistics around a bit without much regard for the "rules" (I basically added a couple
of levels all around, mostly) and that's why for instance the score for the
saves and so on doesn't necessarily match up perfectly.
Meet the Ebon Hulk - the Umber Hulk who died and got even badder.
Enervating Gaze (Su): Enervation as cast by a 10th-level Sorcerer,
200 feet, ranged touch attack and 1d4 negative levels.
Undead (Su): The Ebon Hulk is considered undead with regards to
poisons, magics and so on.
Tremorsense (Ex): Ebon Hulks can automatically sense the location
of anything within 60' that are in contact with the ground.
Very similar to the better-known Umber Hulk, the Ebon Hulks are the carcasses
of umber hulks twisted and re-animated by the powerful curse of the Char'gr
Wastelands. Now, they are even more twisted than their living cousins, in that
their gaze saps the very life force of their prey.
The Ebon Hulk is very similar to the Umber Hulk in how it operates. However,
their sense of cruelty is even greater than that of the Umber Hulk. Where the
Umber Hulk is content merely to smash and kill, the Ebon Hulk would prefer to
torment before the kill. If possible, the Ebon Hulk will try and capture at
least one creature it attacks alive, and slowly torture it to death with its
enervating gaze.
The process of creating an Ebon Hulk from an Umber Hulk have never been
duplicated through Necromancy. It seems that the divine curse on the Char'gr
Wastelands is required for the transformation to occur - and even then it does
not happen all the time.
