Western Union så ut til å sponse alle fotballagene i Gambia. Det har de vel råd til, som tjener alle pengene sine på gambiere som reiser til andre land og må bruke Western Union til å sende det lille de tjener av penger hjem.

Jeg tok bildet på en cupfinale av noe slag. Først stod jeg bak et høyt gjerde, som alle andre, men da noen så at jeg hadde kamera ble jeg hentet frem foran gjerdet, og fikk stå ved siden av TV-kameraet som sendte kampen ut til de tusen hjem. Eller fem tusen hjem. I hvert fall var det anslått at i år 2000 hadde Gambias 1,6 millioner innbyggere fem tusen TV-apparat på deling.

 

Western Union appeared to sponsor all the "professional" football teams in Gambia. (With t-shirts and shorts, not shoes, as you can see.) They can afford it, as they make a lot of money on the fees the take for letting Gambians abroad wire money to their relatives back home.

I took this photo before some kind of cup final. At first I stood behind a fence, but when they saw that I had a camera I was told to go inside the fenced-off area. I got to stand next to the camera that broadcast the match to the rest of the country. Or at least to the five thousand or so TVs that the population of 1,6 million shares between them. (Estimate from 2000, likely to be slightly higher now.)
