Another cathedral, and we're just at photo 10 yet! Well, what can I say? Mexico is a cathedral-intense place to go. Located in San Cristobal de las Casas, the center of indigenous Chiapas, the colours and decorations have been influenced by local preferences. The inside, however, is just what you'd expect.

This is opposed to the situation in nearby village churches, where Maya customs live on side by side with, or actually often on top of, Christianity. Families arrive carrying 2 litre bottles of Coca Cola and hundreds of candles. They go in, light the candles, down the Coke and start burping and chanting. The burps are interpreted as evil spirits leaving the body, and the candles are, well, very nice to look at. Cameras are not allowed inside, but I can tell you it's the prettiest religious hall I've ever seen.

In the photo, notice the boy. You see him and his colleagues everywhere in rural Central America. They walk around, selling chewing gum and lollipops, making just about nothing on every sale, but buy something from them, and just the smile that goes with the candy will be worth the price they ask!
