Testing

The implementation was tested by first performing the following steps:

• Generation of key-pairs for the server process and client user. This was done manually with with the PGP program.
• Signing the public key of the client with the server's secret key (the server always trusts itself). This was also done manually with the PGP program.
• Starting the server application on the server host machine.

Then the client application was started, and a connection to the server opened. The PGP authentication starts automatically, and log the user in (the test implementation only supports one test-user). The authentication procedure takes about 5 to 10 seconds on Sun SparcStation LX computers. This depends on the system load.

The new server and client implementations still support connections to old Telnet programs. This is all automatic, thanks to the option negotiation.
