Summoner's Guild

World Overview

Ancient and Mysterious

The Summoner's Guild is an ancient organisation. No one is exactly sure of when they were first founded, only that they are more ancient than even the colonization of Kairn, as the Empire of Man were astonished to find their presence both in the old land and in the new land. Their exact purpose remains a mystery and any attempts at pressuring their members into spilling their secrets have been entirely fruitless. In fact, the summoners, as they call themselves, seem to possess great powers that they mostly employ to protect the guild and its secrets. Many attempted raids against various summoners have turned into embarassment as the ones raiding were not only unable to locate the summoner, but there was suddenly little evidence of the summoner ever existing. So far, no success has been made in figuring out how the summoners communicate, operate, stay alive or where their headquarters are.

Some information has been deduced based on various historical accounts and encounters. The summoners are present in regions in which there are large amounts of interference from other planes, either due to natural inter-planar geography, magical changes or random chance. A single summoner seems to be deployed to guard the region, but it is unclear from exactly what as there has been plenty of destruction and travesties occuring in their presence. In addition, the summoners seem to have a very strict code of honor, never breaking their duty and being entirely impervious to all attempted forms of charming magic. Mind reading has similarly proven ineffective. Usually, these attempts do not seem to provoke the summoners, who do not seem to even acknowledge the very obvious magic cast on them. This quickly changes if actual harm is attempted against either the summoner or whatever curiosity they are guarding, and can result in either the summoner disappearing without any trace, or the ones responsible doing so.

Planar Travellers

The summoners seem to be intertwined with other planes as previously mentioned, and very critically they seem highly subservient to those who have travelled various planes. Although planar travel is poorly understood, it appears that if you visit enough different planes, you achieve the status of "Planar Traveller" amongst the summoners. Perhaps more unsettingly, it appears that the summoners keep track of critical information on everyone who ever has travelled into at least 1 other plane. Achieving "Planar Traveller" seems to drastically change the attitude of summoners, and they appear to be greatly willing to aid the person in both further planar travel but also in other pursuits. Unfortunately, records on this is highly limited and it is unclear how much summoners can actually aid as well as what their motivation for aiding those who travel planes might be.

In addition to aiding planar travellers, summoners maintain a series of services seemingly available to anyone who does not bear ill intentions. These services including keeping registry of otherplanar creatures that the person might wish to contact, the ability to activate and operate teleportation circles to any known destination and telling general information about the current area the summoner is guarding. However, despite this apparent willingness to serve, there are topics that the summoner seems to not dare discuss whatsoever. These include certain otherplanar creatures, certain planar travellers and the nature of the Summoner's Guild. The summoner does state that anyone who wishes to join the Summoner's Guild is free to do so, but it must be in pursuit of knowledge for knowledge sake, a condition which, paired witht the alieness of the summoners tend to dissuade most potential applicants. It is unclear what happens to those who wish to join and whether there are more requirements.

Summoner Chaos

As previously mentioned, although the Summoner's Guild clearly has some purpose and does provide some services, it is unclear exactly what their goals and ambitions are. Analysis by trusthworthy sources that have encountered summoners indicate that the summoners are incredibly potent spellcasters and otherplanar themselves. This analysis is usually provided by fairly powerful magical casters, as commoners rarely bump into summoners, which further highlights the strange nature of their operation. Attempts to cast magic disturbing fields or similar have been hindered by summoners, who have issued a polite yet stern warning the first time it was attempted. It is unclear what happens if this warning is ignored.

A summoner appearing is usually an omen, as the summoner usually heralds already present or soon-to-be otherplanar influence in the area. Although the summoner may appear highly agreeable and will converse with anyone about planar travel and similar, they seem to not be worried about warnings of death or terror. If there is to be an otherwordly being that will enter through the anomoly and kill the entire local populace, this seems to cause the summoner no grief and causes them to take action. Usually they even seem opposed to any heroes who attempt to do so, and several historical accounts seem to indicate local efforts to contain influence being foiled by summoners, sometimes indirectly and sometimes with brute force. Therefore, summoners usually indicate that there either already is a horrifying creature nearby, or there will be shortly. In rare circumstances, the area they guard appears inactive, although the question then becomes for how long.
